Never too many purses

Funky handbags debut in Roseville, Granite Bay shops
By Lauren Weber, The Press-Tribune

A girl can never have too many purses. Lyndi Eimerl of Fuffy J Couture agrees. Eimerl is co-founder of the Woodland-based handbag company that she and her sister, Kristin Morrow, own. The sister duo offers Roseville and Granite Bay one-of-a-kind, handmade designer handbags. “Everyone loves the handbag,” Eimerl said. “The handbag will always fit you and make you feel good no matter how stylish you are.” What sets Fuffy J Couture apart, besides the name, are the bags themselves. Co-founder Morrow, 23, designs each bag to have its own flair. From clutches and hobo bags, to diaper bags and little girl’s purses, each bag is made from selected tapestry and embellished with vintage-inspired fabrics such as silk, chiffon and cotton.

What started out as a pastime for Morrow in high school, turned into a full-fledged business in September 2006. About a year later, the bags made their way into Sacramento shops Krazy Mary’s Boutique and Felicia Strati, and have recently made their debut in Roseville and Granite Bay boutiques. When employees at Silver Spoon Children’s Boutique in Granite Bay saw the one-of-a-kind diaper bags, they snatched up the line. The store carries two diaper bags and a little girl’s purse that owners Kathy Baenziger and Barbara Norman were able to partially design by choosing the fabrics they wanted. Morrow is happy to do custom-designed handbags and does them quite often, Eimerl said. “A lot of people are drawn to us because it’s something different,” she said.

“They’re very eclectic. More like a piece of art than a handbag,” Morrow said. “I have a love of fine arts. That’s what I enjoy most, being artistic.” Not only are the bags different, but the name is as well. But it took some doing to find a way to describe the sisters’ business. “One day it just hit us,” Eimerl said. It seems the girls’ grandfather, Norman Joerger, deemed the nickname Fuffy J when Eimerl was a young girl and like many kids, wasn’t able to pronounce the word, grandpa. Instead, Fuffy came out and being the oldest grandchild, the name stuck. “He found beauty in everything,” Eimerl said.

Once the name was set and bags were designed, Eimerl and Morrow became walking advertisements for their company. “We get a positive response with the bags everywhere we go,” Eimerl said. And now shoppers in the Roseville area can check out what makes these bags stand out. In addition to Silver Spoon, they can be found in Lil’ Suckers and Home Gift Art Boutique in Roseville and Dionna K Boutique in Granite Bay. Cathi Erlandson, the owner of Lil’ Suckers on Galleria Boulevard, sells four styles of Fuffy J Couture children’s purses. She’s always looking for items that are different and local. Plus the designs are cute, she said.

“Right now we’re focused on boutiques because that’s where customers go to get something out of the ordinary,” Eimerl said. In the next five years, they hope to sell their line nationally, if not internationally. “We have a very big vision and big goals,” she said.

The History of Handbags

By Seth Miller

If we were to trace the origin of handbags, women would likely be surprised to know that they were first utilized by a group of men some 2000 years ago. Although wholesale handbags were not in the scene at this time, men in biblical times did indeed carry the equivalent of what we consider to be the handbags of today.

This practice came to women’s knowledge and from then on, its handbags became completely indispensable. Handbags, purses, or any other kinds of totes will forever be a part of women’s wardrobes. Although some men continue to don handbags occasionally, women have dominated the scene in the handbag industry. No outfit can stand alone without a matching handbag. By far, handbags have encapsulated women’s fashion ever since the first modern versions appeared in France.

Nowadays, handbags were everywhere. Thousands of handbags of all imaginable styles and designs are on the market. Apparently, each kind has found its use in the wardrobe of every woman. And yet, with the overwhelming number of handbags that has emerged year after year and grabbed up by female consumers, there are still many, many more soon to invade women’s fashionable wardrobes. Moreover, handbags designers are proliferating. From a non-designer label to outrageously priced designer handbags, from a simple and plain masterpiece to shiny and elegantly embroidered handbags, the fashion industry will never cease to crank out new handbags for the market.

Who would have ever thought that men from biblical times may have been the ones to give rise to the industry of fashionable handbags?

Handbags provides detailed information on Handbags, Wholesale Handbags, Designer Handbag, Replica Handbags and more. Handbags is affiliated with Discount Designer Handbags.

Handbags and Feng Shui

melie bianco handbags online
By Silvana Rosati-capizzano

Here are some tips help you stay organized and function at optimum levels:

Make sure your handbag is clean, neat and organized.

A smaller handbag that can be worn across your chest, freeing up both your hands will make for an easier shopping trip as well.

What does your handbag look like? Messy, stained, filled with receipts, lists, candy wrappers, endless "to do" lists, old lipsticks, cosmetics, toiletries, heaps of memorabilia, money just thrown in?

Often our handbags become a sea of junk. A lot of us invest a good amount of money in our handbags. We love them, we carry them with pride - but what we carry, is often much more than we need. We often don't give it a thought until it is overflowing with so much stuff that it creates shoulder and neck pain. A messy, heavy handbag is very inauspicious. It causes us stress when we constantly have to dig to find anything. It blocks wealth energy and bogs us down figuratively, physically and literally.

Be reasonable about what and how much you carry.

Make it a habit to clean it out once a week.

To attract wealth energy, also keep a clean, neat, and organized wallet. Coins, bills and cards in their correct space.

Keep lists in an easy access area. When you have completed that days "to do's", throw it out your list.

A clean purse is very auspicious and attracts wealth energy.

A red handbag carry's energized, yang chi. By placing three chinese coins tied together with a red string inside will attract money. If you know a wealthy person, ask them for a bill of money to carry inside your purse. This will carry increased wealth energy inside your handbag.

Help all that money going out this season to find it's way back in.

What ever handbag you fancy, keep it clean, neat, light and organized.

Women better protect purses

from Contra Costa Times

THE PURSE IS a curse to every woman who dreams of having her hands free. It's a black hole that swallows up coins and car keys and compacts, not to mention other female items, which we feel compelled to carry. And yet, carry them we must. We load up our purses and haul them around because it's our duty. Lord knows, someone might need something and we have to be ready.

The downside of carrying a handbag is the ease with which it can be stolen. In the past week alone, the Town Crier has heard of three purse thefts, including a spate of snatchings at the Safeway on Redwood Road. Police say a man/woman team has been distracting customers in the store and stealing purses from their shopping carts. It's a crime of opportunity and can easily be avoided by wearing one's purse like a necktie. A couple of knots and your strap is secure, only to be stolen if it's ripped from your body.

ANOTHER ALERT: On the topic of crime, police say three armed men hit the parking lot of the Redwood Road Safeway on a recent Sunday afternoon, robbing at least six people who were loading groceries into their trunks. The thugs took off in a waiting car after terrorizing the customers and taking their cash.

SEEING RED: Oakland's plans for a stoplight at Mountain and La Salle have had Montclair residents seeing red for months, now. But their arguments may come to a head Tuesday when the issue is addressed by the City Council's Public Works Committee. Stoplight opponent Derek Liecty says

he'll need a good turnout of "upset Montclair residents" to dissuade members from the project they're "hell-bent" on pushing through. You can e-mail him at spoker@sbcglobal.net for the meeting time and place.

AROUND TOWN: Rumor has it a thrift shop is moving into the Lakeshore Avenue space vacated by KidsGap. Not just any thrift shop, but the chain store called "Out of the Closet," started by Magic Johnson to raise money for the Aids Healthcare Foundation. Even with the star status, not everyone is thrilled to see a popular brand name retailer replaced by a thrift shop -- especially in one of Oakland's most upscale shopping districts.

Speaking of shopping, there's good buzz about the new designer clothing store at 4395 Piedmont Avenue called McMullens. Not only does the owner, Sherri McMullen, have great fashion sense, she offers closet consultations and alterations to help clients optimize their wardrobes. Service and style are two things Sherri learned well - cutting her teeth in retail at Nieman Marcus. This is her first boutique and the fulfillment of a dream. Good luck, Sherri!

ROAD HAZARD: Driving in the hills is challenging enough without having to dodge a sink hole the size of Seattle on Shepherd Canyon Road. Neighborhood activist Mike Petouhoff says the hole could "swallow an entire car" if it weren't covered by a large metal plate. He says it's time for the city to come up with a permanent fix, as the pit only seems to only grow bigger with age.

Leather - Why It's So Bad, What's The Alternative?

By Maureen Cram

Are you a vegan? Vegetarian? If so then I expect that you already have your views on why leather is 'bad'. It is a by-product, sometimes referred to as a co-product, of the animal food industry. This article explains more about the 'down' side to leather - the well-known product that is used for all sorts of items, from furniture, car seats and belts to shoes, clothing and handbags.

First of all, what is it? Leather is a material created through the tanning of hides, pelts and skins of animals, primarily cows - but... whose skin are you in? When the milk production of cows on dairy farms decreases, the cows are killed and their skins are made into leather. The hides of their calves, who are frequently raised for veal, are made into high-priced calfskin.

Leather is also made from horses, sheep, lambs, goats, and pigs who are slaughtered for meat. Other species of animals are hunted and killed specifically for their skins, including zebras, bison, water buffaloes, boars, kangaroos, elephants, eels, sharks, dolphins, seals, walruses, frogs, turtles, crocodiles, lizards, and snakes.

But, you say, it looks good and feels good - sitting in your leather couch, your leather car seat, paying your bills with that calf-skin wallet, carrying that leather handbag or briefcase. How about that it wears well? Kangaroo leather is favoured by motorcyclists specifically because of its lighter weight and higher abrasion resistance as compared to cowhide. Leather car seats last longer than material ones, don't they?

There are yes and no comments to that. Leather needs to be chemically treated to ensure it does not rot. Lots of chemicals... Since ancient times, human beings used animal skins and learned to make them leather. The process of using chemicals to turn skins into leather is called tanning. The leather making is a combination of series of processes that starts from skin recovery to curing, soaking and unhairing, deliming and bathing, to vegetable or mineral tanning, lubrication and dyeing, and finally to finishing.

Leather Is Bad for Human Health
Mordants and other chemicals often used to treat leather are linked to nervous disorders, asthma, premature death, gynaecological disorders, weakness, dizziness, headaches, abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, skin and respiratory infections, cancer and other serious illnesses. According to an investigation by the New York State Department of Health, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and other agencies, those who work in tanneries may be greatly increasing their risk of testicular cancer. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that in an area near one Kentucky leather tannery, the incidence of leukaemia was five times the national average. Hmm... perhaps we shouldn't be so quick to purchase that leather lounge suite?

Leather Is Bad for the Environment
Although some leather makers deceptively tout their products as "eco-friendly," turning skin into leather also requires massive amounts of energy and dangerous chemicals. Often, animal skins used for leather are kept from biodegrading (going rotten) by using a variety of dangerous substances, including mineral salts (chromium, aluminium, iron and zirconium), formaldehyde, coal-tar derivatives and various oils and dyes, some of which are cyanide-based. All waste containing chromium is considered hazardous by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other bodies.

In an attempt to appear environmentally conscious, some tanneries are now trying to make improvements, but even if tanneries did not create any pollution, leather would still be bad for the environment. A spokesperson for the largest supplier of leather to automakers in the US said, 'The last thing we want is people thinking we're burning down rain forests for cattle just to put leather in big sport-utes'. But consider this: nearly half of all water used in the US is used to raise animals for meat and leather! According to the EPA, factory farms are the biggest source of pollution of rivers, streams and lakes. In December 1997, the US Senate Agricultural Committee released a report that stated that animals raised for food and leather produce 130 times as much excrement as the entire human population - without the benefit of waste-treatment systems. A Scripps Howard synopsis of the report stated, 'Catastrophic cases of pollution, sickness, and death are occurring in areas where livestock operations are concentrated'.

Locally (in Africa), since 1988, some 30 tanneries in Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, the Sudan, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe have received assistance in pollution control focused on the establishment or upgrading of effluent treatment facilities. Hmmm... it all sounds yucky to me. But what can we use instead of animal leather that is better for us, the animals, the planet?

What about the alternatives?
Many pseudo-leather materials have been developed, allowing those who wish to wear leather-like garments to do so without actually wearing leather. One example of this is vegan microfiber, which claims to be stronger than leather when manufactured with strength in mind. Vinyl materials, Pleather, Durabuck, NuSuede, Hydrolite, and other alternatives exist, providing some features similar to leather. Faux leather made by Ultrafabrics has, according to the company's Web site, 'features to protect the environment like a 100% biodegradable backcloth, no plasticizers, no stabilizers, no adhesives, extensive recycling in the manufacturing process-and no need for potentially toxic after-care'.

You want non-leather handbags, shoes, wallets, belts... there are many reputable companies out there to help you with your new choices. Check out the Internet for names. Yes a lot are in the US and the UK but you can order safely on line. There are plenty of places in South Africa where you can buy faux leather articles... do a search on Google to find out for yourself!

When you buy shoes, check out what they are made of. There should be a label on the bottom or the inside to tell you if the shoe is produced from man-made materials or leather. If you don't see the label, just ask the store manager what they are made from. That is what I do. I always explain that I need to know because I am allergic to leather (morally allergic that is).

What about the leather car seats? Can't order faux leather for them. True. But there are alternatives. Even in high-end vehicles, leather seats are becoming something of an anachronism. Leather seats are hot in the summer and very cold in the winter. Yes I know you can get them heated and cooled... but why not help the environment (and the animals too if you care for them) by buying non-leather seats.

Final thought
Wearing leather hurts animals, the environment, and the people who produce it. Care for the planet and all the species that inhabit it by buying readily-available alternatives. For many years I have been interested in the welfare of animals, companion animals and especially farm animals. Being vegetarian for over 45 years and vegan for nearly 10, I felt drawn to helping those that had no voice.

Several years ago, I discovered EFT, when I found I had breast cancer. EFT helped me tremendously to solve the emotional issues that I had rationalized many years before, issues that I thought were resolved but as I found with using EFT, were not! I decided to train further and found I had great empathy for animals. I tried EFT on my own cats for various issues and was amazed how quickly the issues were resolved! I tried EFT on other animals... I was surprised to find that I had success with them!

I then decided that I didn't want to do this... it was too strange, too weird, but with some pushing from my EFT teacher I continued to expand my knowledge about surrogate energy healing. At this time I was also expanding my human EFT practice and was having wonderful success. I now teach humans how to use EFT - on themselves and on their animals - and hold regular training courses in Johannesburg. I also have many international clients (human and animal!) and communicate with them by phone, Skype and e-mail. That is one of the many great things about using EFT... you don't have to be there in person, face to face. Although face to face works great too!

So You Love Handbags?

from BagFancy

A few things to consider before shopping . So you really like handbags. Okay, maybe you love them. That much is clear. But now what? Picking a handbag isn't rocket science, but there are some things to think about when shopping. Some are questions of what you want in a bag, while other considerations are much more practical. Thinking through these can make a difference between being happy with your purchase or leaving your new bag sitting in your closet collecting dust.

Style
You're browsing, and you spot a bag that you're absolutely in love with. Sitting on the rack (or calling to you from your computer screen), it's the cutest thing you've ever seen! But unless you're going to hang it on the wall of your apartment for your guests to admire, you'll want to ask yourself this question: What is this bag going to look like on me? Remember that a bag is only one piece of the puzzle - it should ideally match an outfit or your wardrobe (not just color, but also style and attitude). So before buying, mentally cruise your closet and try to think of what you would wear while carrying that bag. Image is everything!!! When considering handbags/outfits, look at the image you are trying to project. Whether you're going for cute, sexy, cool, chic, conservative, etc. think of how the bag will help you pull off the image. Remember, everyone is unique and some styles don't work for everyone. Also, not all styles work for every occasion. Generally you will shop with specific kinds of activities or events in mind - and of course a formal night out is not going to be the same as a day of running errands. You might eventually want to develop a rotating repertoire of different styles for different occasions. Finally, consider your body shape and size. Handbags come in many different shapes and colors along with style, so make sure to pick one that is flattering for you. Take a look at a guide to matching body and handbag shape before picking (see Links at bottom of article).

Carrying Capacity
All right, so you've found a handbag that looks great on you. But it is a bag, after all, and you just might also want to put stuff in it. How much will you be able to fit in your potential bag? Also, what are you going to put in it? Along with the overall size of the bag, give some thought to things like compartments and accessibility.

Comfort
Another question: how easy will it be to carry? How big is the bag, and what kind of handle does it have? Depending on where you're going and whether you have a place to put your bag, you might end up holding it for a while. You're going to look great with your new handbag. You might as well be comfortable too!

Price
From the infrequent buyer to the shopaholic, we all eventually ask ourselves: How much should I spend? What is this bag worth to me? "Worth" is not just a matter of a dollar value, but also of what it does for you when you have it. Will you be happy that you spent the money and bought it? Is it worth giving up lunch for a week to own that cute bag? Is it worth giving up the extra week's lunch for the matching shoes you now need? Whether you spend thousands of dollars on a Hermes Kelly Bag or $8 on a tote bag from Target, if it was worth it to you, then as Bob Barker says… the price is right.

In the end… Shopping for a bag should be fun. That's what it's all about, isn't it? But if you take a little extra time to consider whether the style, carry capacity, comfort level, and price all suit you - you can end up being that much happier with your choice. And hey… Informed shopping can be that much more enjoyable anyway!

Melie Bianco Handbags

from Handbags 101

Tough to track down because of their relative newcomer status on the scene, Melie Bianco is based in Los Angeles, California. With a mission to provide quality fashionable handbags and purses at reasonable rates, Melie Bianco is off to a fantastic start. Stars like Paris Hilton and Kelly Osborne have been snapped around town with the Melie Heart Hobo on their arms in spite of the low, low prices. Melie Bianco proves that a wonderful handbag does not have to cost over $400 to be trendy, even by Hollywood standards!

Applique Ethnic Hobo - This faux leather hobo by Melie is an interesting twist on the hobo shape. Less slouchy than most and more interesting than many, Melie Bianco has added some much needed distinctiveness to this handbag. Intricate, bohemian-inspired stitching and colorful, detailed edging add a definite funky feel. The best feature of the Appliqu Ethnic Hobo is the faux leather wrapped handle. Available in several color combinations, this hobo has added appeal.

Fur Detective Hobo - Wear white after Labor Day by carrying this fluffy white hobo bag. Metallic dual handles attach to white fur. Bianco continued on with fur and flash by adding a front pouch with matching metallic flap. If the fur and flash weren't enough, studs adorn the handles and the pocket flap as well, adding a truly one-of-a-kind touch to this already unique bag.

Multi Colored Chevron - Taking a tip from inimitable fashion icon Marc Jacobs, Melie Bianco knocks off the chevron design and brightens it up a bit with vibrant colors in the pink to purple range. The V-shaped chevrons add an interesting element to the handbag. Metal loops on the strap and appealing metal hardware are a nice touch. Interesting multicolored long tassels on the top zipper pull make a flirty and fun addition to this great bag.

Convertible Ring Hobo - As seen on MTV, Laguna Beach and in several fashion magazines, this Convertible Hobo has two rings on the strap in order to lengthen or shorten the handle. This one is a little different because it is a convertible. You can change the Ring Hobo to suit yourself. The white bag is made from soft synthetic material that looks and feels like real leather.

Living In A Juicy World

from Carnegie Mellon Today

If the world seems to be getting juicier, it may not be due to global warming. It may be due to global wearing—of Juicy Couture, the white-hot fashion empire launched by a Carnegie Mellon alumna.

Juicy Couture is everywhere. It’s casual and cocktail; sunglasses and shoes; men, women, and children. It’s equal parts class and sass—and stores can’t get enough of it. Reese, Gwyneth, Madonna, Brad, Kevin, and Ben all wear Juicy. But Juicy’s more affordable than many other labels, so the soccer mom next door wears it, too.

It began modestly. Gela Nash-Taylor—who was Gela Jacobson when she graduated from Carnegie Mellon as a drama major in 1978—was pregnant and couldn’t find maternity clothes she liked. So she and her good friend Pam Skaist-Levy bought loads of plain vintage jeans. Using their design sense and a lot of hard work, they transformed the jeans into a successful line of maternity wear.

By 1997, having learned the basics of the fashion business, they were ready to tackle something larger—but they didn’t go the standard route. Nash-Taylor recalls, “People say you have to go to a bank, do a business plan, and borrow $60,000 to $100,000. If I’d started a business $60,000 in debt, I wouldn’t have been able to get up in the morning.

“I don’t know if that’s the difference between men and women, or between business majors and acting majors—but Pam and I didn’t want that kind of debt.”

Instead, the entrepreneurs launched
Juicy Couture with $200 of their own money and a revolving line of credit. They didn’t take a salary for two years; they plowed profits back into the business; and they repaid loans almost instantly. “The bank was irritated,” says Nash-Taylor wryly. “They didn’t make much money from us.”

Juicy Couture is different from many companies in another way: it does no formal market research. The founders create and sell what they want to have in their own closets, and in the closets of their husbands and kids. (Nash-Taylor is married to Duran Duran bassist John Taylor; he designs the logos for the Juicy men’s line.) "We know what we like," says Nash-Taylor.

And clearly they know what their customers like.
Juicy Couture lines have expanded quickly, but thoughtfully. Women loved the casual "lifestyle clothes," so the company added men's and kids’ lines—along with accessories, swimwear, and watches. The founders didn't want to wear other designers' clothes at night, so they launched Couture Couture—basically "Juicy after dark" cocktail and evening wear. This summer, their first fragrance will debut. And this year, 17 new free-standing Juicy Couture stores will join the four already open. "We have so many ideas and plans," says Nash-Taylor.

In 2003,
Liz Claiborne bought the company for a reported $53 million and a percent of future sales, but Nash-Taylor and Skaist-Levy are still the heart of Juicy Couture, with responsibility for creative direction as well as day-to-day operations.

Remarkably Retro

Melie Bianco is known for making handbags that are affordable, and although there is no style that sells for over $100, she never sacrifices style or cuts costs. All of her bags are made from soft faux leather and are really unique. We don't know how Melie Bianco does it for such little money but her bags have become wildly popular among celebrities, editors and fashion mavens in-the-know because they never look cheap and are undeniably stylish. A pro at taking vintage influences and making modern looking bags, here is a list of some of our favorite retro-inspired styles from Melie Bianco:

It's hard to get more retro than the Pleated Distressed Patent Bag. From the shiny patent finish to the funky handle, this handbag completes the wide leg, fringe bangs look that is all the rage right now.

If you really want to get all Studio 54, than the V Trimmed Gathered Hobo goes great with those sequins platforms. Or if you just want to update that wide leg pants look, than it's equally as stylish. The unique v-shaped design and compact hobo shape make this a very modern handbag despite the obvious retro influence. Oh an it also comes in black.

Retro inspired or not, the Patent Flap Carry On Bag is absolutely gorgeous. From the modern design to the vibrant green hue, this is bound to start a handbag revolution or at the very least will sellout fast.

A Quicker Resort This Year to Deep Discounting

By BOB TEDESCHI
The New York Times

KMART made a generation of bargain hunters react like starving dogs to a ringing bell. Now Internet companies want to bring the blue-light special to the cellphone — only this time, the bells are text messages telling shoppers that Valentino clutches, Christian Dior sunglasses and other luxury items are selling at more than 50 percent off.

That is the concept behind Ideeli, a Web site that will officially be introduced Monday, offering members a chance to buy heavily discounted luxury items — as long as they are quick enough. Some items sell out within hours.

Ideeli is partly shopping as sport, but it also speaks to the nervousness of retailers this holiday season. Because of economic fears linked especially to the subprime mortgage trouble, retailers and brand producers scaled back their inventories with early holiday promotions last month amid concern that consumers planned to spend less.

That has proved to be a boon to sites like the online liquidator overstock, Bluefly and others that sell highly discounted products — what is known in retailing as “distressed inventory.”

For online shoppers, this has meant deals on items that are rarely discounted until after Christmas, if at all, and deeper discounts on other goods that would have sold out at higher prices in previous years. And although the prices on some items may still be beyond the ability of straitened shoppers, they could make other gift givers look like heroes.

Bluefly.com, which also sells discounted apparel and accessories from upscale brands, has had an easier time finding inventory this year than in the past, said Melissa Payner, its chief executive.

Although she declined to name specific brands for fear of offending the luxury manufacturers she counts on as suppliers, Ms. Payner said that the flow of designer handbags has been so strong that the site has been sending e-mail messages to its customers twice a week to promote new bags. In years past, Bluefly has not had enough stock in this category to justify a single e-mail promotion, she said. A quick check of the site on Sunday showed that brands like Dolce & Gabbana, Furla, Goldenbleu and Linea Pelle were being featured.

“We couldn’t necessarily have gotten the selection in our designer handbag and accessory areas,” Ms. Payner said. “You may have seen the same names there, but not the breadth or depth of assortment.”

Patrick Byrne, chief executive of Overstock.com, said the supply of distressed goods “isn’t just limited to apparel.” Electronic goods and jewelry are also plentiful, with diamond necklaces flourishing on the site.

“Retailers in general had a terrible Columbus Day so they didn’t reorder like they usually do,” Mr. Byrne said. As a result, he said, manufacturers began offering him items in November, well before other years. That has put Overstock in the unusual position of carrying discounted products that were still available at full price at Macy’s and Nordstrom.

Like Overstock and Bluefly, Ideeli works as a clearinghouse of sorts for goods that did not sell elsewhere at full price. And, like Bluefly, Ideeli limits itself to high-fashion goods. Unlike these other companies, though, Ideeli is focused squarely on women, and it does not operate like a typical retailer.

• Users gain access to Ideeli through an invitation from the company or from existing members. (The company said it would open memberships until midnight Tuesday). The site sells just three or four products over the course of a week, which members can preview. They then stand by for e-mail or text messages saying when a specific product has gone on sale.

Then comes the rush. Over the roughly six months of testing the site, Ideeli’s chief executive, Paul Hurley, said, items sell out within two hours, and sometimes within 10 minutes. “We’re careful to maintain a sense of scarcity,” Mr. Hurley said. “And women love this. There’s a whole sort of game aspect to it.”

Shoppers who want to increase their odds of scoring a bargain can pay $8 monthly to shop an hour earlier than general members. About 10 percent of the site’s 10,000 current members do so.

There is, of course, a downside to scarcity. Because the site carries enough of a given item to satisfy only about 5 percent of the customer base, many customers will go away disappointed. But Sucharita Mulpuru, a retail analyst with Forrester Research, said the strategy is important for selling prominent luxury items. “This is a good way to drive a sense of urgency without diluting the marquee nature of the item,” she said. “They’re not just dumping everything on a site.”

Ideeli just received $3.8 million in venture-capital financing from, among others, Kodiak Ventures, which also backed ChannelAdvisor and Groove Media. Those backers will not get rich selling four items a week in limited quantities. Next year, Ideeli plans to more aggressively sell advertising to brands that want to reach its fashion-conscious audience. Premium memberships can also be expected to increase revenue.

• In introducing a site that helps apparel and accessory makers find a market for slower-selling items, Mr. Hurley’s timing is good. He said he has seen many manufacturers “having a tougher time this year, so there’s more product available.”

Big offline liquidators, like Genco of Pittsburgh, said they too had seen subtle changes in the market. Robert Auray, president of Genco Marketplace, the company’s liquidation division, said that while most categories had shown little change, retailers and manufacturers of apparel and consumer electronics were liquidating more goods than in years past. “Super-high-end brands are doing fine,” he said, “but mass-affluent brands are having a tougher time, so more product is available than there was.”

Mr. Auray, whose company sells more than $1 billion worth of distressed goods annually, said: “Retailers are getting more and more careful with buying, so they may be canceling orders. Everyone’s a little nervous about the health of the consumer right now.”

Maximize Style with Discount Handbags

By Scott Nichols

Handbags are quite a unique accessory. Not only are they an attractive accessory, they are also functional. Other accessories, such as earrings and necklaces, are nice to look at, but they don’t serve a function other than their obvious aesthetic value. Handbags, however, serve a purpose other than just looking good.

The Forgotten Accessory

Of course, handbags only enhance outfits when they are fashionable and coordinate with what we are wearing. Unfortunately, many don’t give thought to the impact their handbag can give on the overall image they project. Now, to get the most out of this functional accessory, it isn’t necessary to have a different handbag to match every outfit. Women don’t need to change handbags every single day. However, it does make sense to use handbags that complement your attire.

By being a savvy shopper and seeking out discount handbags, you can probably get more than one handbag for the same amount you would pay for one at retail. You don’t need twenty handbags, unless of course you want that many. However, a few carefully selected discount handbags in a few styles and colors can help you accessorize your wardrobe perfectly every day.

Instant Wardrobe Update

Adding a new discount handbag or two to your wardrobe can be an inexpensive way to give your wardrobe a quick fashion update. One of the most cost-effective ways to introduce the latest trends into your wardrobe is to update your handbag. By investing in classic clothing and contemporary discount handbags, your wardrobe will always appear fresh and modern.

When selecting discount handbags to add pizazz to your wardrobe, think about the clothing pieces that you love to wear. Buy discount handbags that will work with several of your favorite outfits, so you will have an easy time coordinating the handbags with the things you wear most often. Additionally, make sure that you buy discount handbags that are very different from each other in appearance. Buying discount handbags that are so similar they can hardly be told apart won’t spice up your wardrobe. Choose carefully to get the maximum style bang for your buck!

Let the Real You Come Through

Your handbag says a lot about you and your personality. Particularly when you work in an environment where you have to wear a uniform or follow a strict dress code, your discount handbag may be the best way to let your co-workers see the real you. Unusual prints and shapes are a way to let people see your creative side. Bright colors convey an air of confidence. A classic, timeless shape and fabric sends a message of elegance and understatement. What kind of mood are you in today? Let your discount handbag tell the story!

Is This It for the It Bag?

By ERIC WILSON

EVERYONE’S talking about the bubble, and when it will burst.

There is too much inventory. Prices are absurdly high. And analysts are predicting a slowdown in a market that may have already passed its peak of irrational growth, in 2004. Even as prices have increased exponentially over the last three years, with buyers trying to get in on the ground floor of premier properties — the Paddington, the Muse, the Giant City — so, too, have reports of dwindling consumer confidence and a looming credit crisis that could potentially wipe out the value of Uptowns and Downtowns alike. Some people are concerned that a combination of volatile interest rates and the weakened dollar will ultimately cripple the market. Status handbags, you see, are a lot like housing. After the rise of the $1,000 purse, fashion’s equivalent of the $1 million studio, there inevitably comes talk of a backlash. Are we now living in a handbag bubble?

“The new condo market today is comparable to the It bag,” said Stephanie Phair, the vice president for merchandising for Portero, an online auction house that specializes in the resale of luxury goods. “Every bag has a name. At least in New York, you see the same thing with all those condo buildings going up with valets, pools, dog parks and fancy names. At some point, people are going to decide that, in fact, what they’d like is to go back to the tried and tested, the classic prewar or the apartment on lower Fifth Avenue.” “The appeal of the It bag,” Ms. Phair said, “has started to wane.”

Yet this is a moment when every bag seems to have, in addition to a price tag that could be confused with a ZIP code, a name that conjures up images of a wealthy enclave or a cast member of “Gossip Girl.” Heloise, Mathilde and Beata are bags by Chloé; Mariah, Camila and Elsa come from Marc Jacobs; the Uptown, the Downtown and the Muse are designs from Yves Saint Laurent, not buildings by André Balazs.

An entire genre of slouchy handbags, described as “hobos,” may even strike some readers as unintentionally funny, if not slightly offensive, with their earnest descriptions and indiscreet prices — the Dolce & Gabbana Miss Perfect hobo, $795; the Celine Bittersweet hobo, $1,700; the Prada nappa gauffre Antic hobo, $1,750 (a crazy gopher hobo?) — for bags meant to look as if they once belonged to tramps. “Designers are just testing the laws of economics by pricing handbags higher and higher until people stop buying them,” said Lauren Goodman, the fashion director of Domino magazine. “They are so expensive, and drive you to buy a new one every season, which is kind of a horrifying thought.”

Ms. Goodman is aware of the hot bags of the moment: the Prada leather styles that repeat the ombré patterns of the fall collection; the Marc Jacobs oversize clutch, carried by several editors during the spring collections; the YSL Downtown bag, which is shaped like a Chinese takeout container with a handle. “Some people still carry the Muse,” she said of another YSL style. “They think the Muse is hot, because they’re kind of behind.” But how does one afford to stay ahead?

At the rate that designers are introducing new styles, that no longer seems possible, which has led to a shift in perceptions about status bags. “That whole phenomenon has changed,” said Julie Gilhart, the fashion director of Barneys New York. “Our customers seem to be looking for something more interesting. They don’t want to spend money on something everyone else has.” They don’t want a one-season bag.

At the least, there is anecdotal evidence that the fastest-growing segment of the fashion industry, also considered its most lucrative because of its high profit margins, may not be immune to market exhaustion. Coach, the leading American handbag company, reported last month that its profit growth may slow this holiday season, setting off jitters among investors who view the brand as the entry-level threshold for luxury goods and an indicator for the broader health of the market. One could not avoid the sense of dread reflected in a Women’s Wear Daily headline this week: “A Chilly Wind Blows: Retailers Are on Edge About Holiday Season.”

Handbag sales in the $7 billion United States market are expected to increase by 15 percent this year, according to the stock research firm Telsey Advisory Group. This is considered a disappointment, because the growth is about half as strong as the category’s 28 percent gain in 2004. “That $5,000 Marc Jacobs bag is so yesterday’s news,” said Elizabeth Kiester, the chief creative director of LeSportsac, which is developing a line of bags with Stella McCartney that will sell for under $350, beginning in February. “The luxury market is so over the top now that it is demented. I call them limo bags. I don’t have a limo.”

5 More Things To Consider When Purchasing A Designer Handbag

by Bridget Wright

I ran across this site that gave 5 things to consider when purchasing a designer handbag. Well, just to add my .02 to it, I came up with 5 MORE things to consider…blah…blah…blah.

1. Does it look great with EVERY and ANYthing you wear? This is important, especially for women who don’t like to change purses everytime they wear an outfit. If the purse is versatile, it’s a definite plus for me.

2. Is there an exchange return policy? Again, important if you’re not 100% sure if you’re going to like the bag, for whatever reason. Tastes do wane for certain styles. You want to be happy with your purcahse, right? With a return policy, the retailer is saying, “We’re not happy until you are happy!”

3. Is the label or the bag manufacturer in a prominent place on the bag? Enough said.

4. Can it be ordered, purchased and returned all online? The convenience of ordering online can be wonderful for any situation and also offers the comfort and privacy AND time you need to really make good selections before investing so much money.

5. Do any of your friends have one just like it? If they do, go to the next choice, right?

These to me are very, very important considerations to examine when you’re about to make a big purchase like a designer handbag. Consider and weigh ALL options, but just make sure you’re happy, really happy with the bag that you do choose!

Miu Miu Takes Macau - DesignersLA Takes Melie Bianco!

DesignersLA Takes Melie Bianco!

from Women's Wear Daily

MACAU — The seas were choppy and chilly winds were blowing as guests boarded the chartered ferry from Hong Kong, but no one seemed to mind the weather when they arrived in Macau to see that Miu Miu had pulled out all of the stops for a fashion show and public relations exercise the likes of which this city had never seen before.

Nearly 300 guests were invited to witness a first (and last) of its kind event when Miu Miu presented its spring collection in the Wynn Theater. It was the first production in the theater, as well as the last (casino owner Steve Wynn decided just weeks ago to remove the red velvet banquettes and tear down the stage in favor of additional private gambling rooms). Using innovative choreography and clever video projections, models paraded across the stage in Miu Miu's latest — eliciting delighted exclamations from the crowd of celebrities, socialites and press. And the whoops kept coming as dancers from Paris' famed Crazy House cabaret took the stage in an eye-popping finale.

Sebastian Suhl, chief executive officer of Prada Asia Pacific, said the idea behind the event was simply to promote Miu Miu. "This is only the second large event we have done for Miu Miu. The first was to open the store in The Landmark [in Hong Kong] in December '06. We wanted to do something that fits the collection for the spring-summer season and we wanted to do something special — and obviously location is very important. No other luxury brand has done anything in Macau — in at least five or six years and maybe even longer than that," said Suhl.

Although Miu Miu doesn't yet have a store in Macau, there were 25 million reasons for holding the party here. The enclave, once a sleepy Portuguese colony, is now better known as Las Vegas East, with a spate of major hotel-casino openings and a tremendous surge in visitors, mostly from Mainland China. The number of visitors reached 25 million last year and is expected to reach 40 million by 2010.

It's no surprise, then, that Miu Miu will have a store here by the middle of the year. "The [Asia-Pacific] business has grown tremendously, and it's sizeable," said Suhl. "Based on that and on the strength of the brand generally, what we're doing is aggressively expanding. The first expansion will be in Macau, with Miu Miu taking the current Prada store at Wynn," he said, noting that Prada will move to a location three times larger, also in Wynn. "Prada will have the largest location in Wynn," said Suhl, who is eager to take advantage of additional floor space. "We can bring in categories like ready-to-wear and men's wear and do shoes properly."

Currently, Miu Miu has eight locations in the region — four in Hong Kong, two in Taipei, one in Singapore and one in Jakarta — and Suhl is preparing to roll out the brand to new markets, including South Korea, Australia and possibly Kuala Lumpur. China is also in the cards. "The challenge for China for any brand is not only finding the right hardware and the right landlord, but also finding the right locations. There are many, many projects going on right now in China and we're evaluating all of them for both brands. Miu Miu is definitely not forgotten in China — you'll see Miu Miu stores there as well as in Korea," said Suhl.

He added that Miu Miu also is likely to expand its presence in Singapore and Taiwan. In most cases, Prada is either already in a market Miu Miu plans to enter or has concrete plans to enter it as well. This year, the Prada brand will open its second Kuala Lumpur location at the new Pavilion shopping mall. Still, Suhl insists Prada is not used to test markets before Miu Miu opens its own shops. "In Asia, customers and the press have understood that Miu Miu is a brand on its own. Part of that is the new concept we launched. Hong Kong is a great case in point. We have four really prime locations that are performing far beyond our expectations — ours and the landlords'," he said.

Any expansion, however, demands cash, which makes the much-anticipated, thrice-delayed launch of Prada Group's initial public offering that much more compelling. Prada Group spokesman Tomaso Galli said plans are moving ahead, albeit with an eye on the market. "In 2008 there are two windows of opportunity — the earliest one is in June-July and the other is in October-November," said Galli. "We said that, when we get closer to the date, we would evaluate if one of those two windows presents a good opportunity. So, we still haven't set a specific time for the IPO; it very much depends on market conditions."

While he declined to be more specific about timing, it's clear the group would like to go ahead in order to raise capital for its future growth in countries like China. "It's a good opportunity to take advantage of the momentum that all of our brands are having — obviously, if we want to further this expansion and development, we will need resources, and an IPO would give us resources to really invest even more than what we do now," said Galli. "But we're not forced to do it if the markets are in such a situation that it wouldn't be advisable. We're under no pressure at all."

Industry sources valued Prada at an estimated 4 billion to 5 billion euros, or $5.91 billion to $7.39 billion, at current exchange.

When pressed to evaluate market conditions, Galli replied: "The good thing is that, just as all of the optimism two months ago was too early, all the pessimism now is also too early. We'll see what happens in the next two months. Well go on, we'll do the work and we'll see," he said.

Special Delivery

from Women's Wear Daily
By Kavita Daswani

Although
accessories designers are newly embracing a more toned-down aesthetic, the category is still sparkling. Vendors across the board are citing impressive sales figures for the year past and the year going forward. Many agree that a change in
